The MOST RESPONSIBLE things for parents to do is to teach whatever values they choose, but to also “keep it real” and not ignore things in the hopes that they just won’t exist or happen. It’s difficult to change stereotypes that have been around for decades or centuries perhaps.

Talking to our kids with honesty and allowing them to open up to us is the BEST way for us to protect them and INFORM them. But, the one thing that you can control is your own behavior. Iranian men get a bad rap for being male chauvinistic, abusive, possessive, jealous, insecure, hairy, fixated on jokes related to bowel movements, and it goes on and on.

It's not like other types of inter-cultural dating.

I am British and am interested in Persian culture / language and Iran itself.

My problem is that time and again I meet men who think Oh, she’s easy because she is ‘English’ and they then revert back to marrying Persian girls. I hope that many members of our community write in and share their thoughts as well, and I hope that some of them serve to provide evidence contrary to your assumptions.

Obviously internet dating is a minefield of predatory men who are only after one thing. Are we non Persian girls just for dating or bedding? I am, of course, not saying that your assumptions are incorrect.

You’re a smart lady…filter out the bad apples, but give the good ones a chance. Iranian men are actually among the more open-minded over many other tight-knit traditional cultures.

It's not like other types of inter-cultural dating. I would be interested in your thoughts as I am getting quite disheartened at the attitudes. I think, very unfortunately, that there are some cultural stereotypes (in both directions! So good, let’s get these all out in the open so that we can talk about them.I, too, have heard many times from Iranian men (or men from any of the middle-eastern cultures for that matter) that they are happy to date American or non-Iranian women, but that they would never marry one.You cannot nor are you responsible for changing the way all Iranians think, but you can still meet a man and change the way HE thinks because of your assertiveness and confidence about this topic. American and European women get a bad rap for being “easy,” feministic, and generally lacking morals.We cannot do much to change these OVERgeneralizing stereotypes on a global level, but we can talk about it. I have met Iranian men who break all the molds and American women who do too. From what I read already, they are very stuck up and have high standards. The Iranian American girl I dated had super controlling parents. Persian-American, not religious, 26 yrs old, father not in the picture, mother is-havent met her yet. I believe that the world would be a much better place if we all approached things like children do, without superficial discrimination.
